About the day
The Games brought together clubs from across the region, drawing competitors from Swindon and surrounding towns. Around 200 took part, with strong representation from local disability clubs. Swindon Open Door Club attended in force as always, joined again this year by Swindon Advocacy Movement and the 16–40 PHAB Club.
Generous community support underpins the event. Swindon Athletics Club provided full use of its facilities free of charge; Croft Leisure Centre kindly donated tables; and Highworth Community Centre and Town Council supplied chairs, all at no cost.
Organised jointly by Swindon, Highworth, Lechlade and Chippenham Lions Clubs — who share workload and costs — the 2026 event is expected to total around £3,500. It is now well known across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, the Bristol area and beyond. Major expenses include 375 packed lunches, 500 medals, storage and van hire.
Having supported the Games for years, I remain impressed by how professionally run and welcoming they are. Above all, the competitors make the day special — giving their all, cheering each other on, making friends and proudly collecting medals.
Warm sunny weather presented an extra challenge, and a few races were cancelled to keep everyone safe. Yet enthusiasm and determination never wavered. By day’s end, competitors and carers departed with smiles, medals and lasting memories. For all who helped organise and support this wonderful occasion, the effort was truly worthwhile.
It was a pleasure representing Highworth & District Lions at the 2026 Bob Cook Summer Games, seeing the joy the event brings to those with learning difficulties and physical challenges.
